What is the best cardio to do for people with bad knees?

I would love to run on the treadmill but my knees always hurt. What else can I do that has a similar calorie burn as running?

If you enjoy using a treadmill, instead of running, you can increase the incline and vary the speed to create a version of interval training. Attempt this by increasing the incline up slowly until you are almost at the maximum but keep the pace slower than regular brisk walking. This will utilize muscles that are not required often and will result in a large caloric expenditure.

Also, you can try the recumbent bike or the elliptical for other forms of cardiovascular equipment that are also not difficult on the knees but pack a good punch in terms of calorie burn.
