Foods to Avoid for Weight Loss

Avoid fast foods when you are trying to lose weight.

Many weight loss diet regimens, fads or scientifically-based weight loss diets have a long list of foods for effective weight loss. Some recommend a high carbohydrate diet and a low protein diet. Other weight loss diet regimens like the South Beach diet recommend less carbohydrates but more protein to give you a feeing of fullness.

Basically, foods that are high in calories should be avoided. Since fat (1 gram is equivalent to 9 calories) contains more calories than carbohydrates and protein (1 gram of protein or carbohydrate is equivalent to 4 calories), it should be eaten minimally.  However, it is ideal to eat a nutritious and a well balanced diet when you aim for weight loss. Not only does it cause you to lose weight, but more so your diet should be nutritious to fuel and maintain your important bodily processes. Thus, the goal is to avoid nutritionally poor and high calorie foods.

Here is the list of foods to avoid:

  • Fried food drenched in too much fat, especially those that are deep fried.  The best option is to steam, grill, or bake and remove much of the oil.
  • Fast foods, since they are deep fried in saturated oil and are laden with lots of salt. The best thing to do is to cook your own food and use vegetable oil low in saturated fat.
  • Junk food. If anyone doesn’t know what this is here are examples: a bag of chips, potato chips, French fried potatoes, sodas and the like. These snacks are high in calories but low in nutritional content. Lose weight by eating the right foods and at the same time avoid making your body a garbage bin for garbage foods.
  • Avoid meat-based cooking oils which are chock-full of saturated fats. Opt for vegetable oils such as canola, soybean, and corn oils, and especially olive and coconut oils.
  • Fat of any meat. Remove all visible fat and eat only the lean portion. And, don’t even think of adding that fatty meat to your casserole.
  • Avoid eating the skin of chicken or any fowl. These are loaded with cholesterol.
  • Ground meat with the fatty and lean portions mixed together. Aim for lean meat that has been ground.
  •  Mayonnaise. Use low fat mayo instead.
  • Fruit juices, whether fruit that was juiced or worse, artificially flavored. Eat the whole fruit and avoid juicing it. Juicing extracts all the sugar (fructose) in the fruit loaded with calories, and strips it of the fiber. Eating the whole fruit allows you to take in the healthy fiber which will satisfy hunger and slow down the absorption of sugar in your blood stream.
  • Refined foods such as refined wheat in bread and pasta. Instead, choose whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta.
  • Sausages made from leftovers bound with fat, additives and preservatives
  • Definitely, avoid foods with trans-fatty acids. They are high in calories and can even damage your arteries. Be knowledgeable. Read food labels carefully before you buy them.
  • Margarine is a no-no. It is loaded with a very high concentration of saturated fats and accumulates in your arteries making them hard and brittle leading to damage, which is medically termed atherosclerosis.
  • Frozen foods that are high in fat such as frozen pizza, pot pies, breaded fish sticks and chicken dinners. It’s best to prepare your own frozen food with low fat ingredients, vegetables and skinless chicken.
  • White sugar. Obviously, this is too refined and present in almost all candies, sugared drinks, sugared iced tea, pastries, and chocolate cakes. Avoid these foods altogether. It’s better to use natural sweeteners or muscovado sugar. Or better yet, drink your tea unsweetened and add a refreshing twist of lemon.
  • High sodium foods. Foods that are canned contain high sodium amounts as preservatives. Other high sodium foods include hot dogs, cheese, tomato sauce, deli meat and frozen dinners.

If these are the foods to avoid, what are the best foods to eat? Basically, if the food is in its natural state, not refined and plant-based (as opposed to animal-based), you are sure that it is healthy and will not load you with useless calories. Love them now and loathe the above mentioned food!
