B12 Vitamins

Many people talk about the importance of regularly taking a B12 supplement; however, many of those same people don’t really understand the full extent of what this megavitamin does for the body. Vitamin B12, also referred to as cobalamin, is a water soluble vitamin that plays an important part in the function of the brain and nervous system and for the formation of red blood cells. It is required for the healthy and regular metabolism of every cell in the body including DNA synthesis, fatty acid synthesis, and energy production.

The Energy Vitamin

Amongst other things, vitamin B12 is often called ‘the energy vitamin’ as it is directly involved in the production of energy from fat and protein food sources meaning that its abundance can help increase levels of energy in the body as well as help with fat metabolism, always a good thing for those looking to shed weight it is good to note however, that while it is not directly responsible for losing weight, it does help play a role in it. In addition to its metabolism properties, B12 is also useful in elderly persons to aid in cognitive function and healing of neurological impairment.

Forms of B12 Supplement

The vitamin B12 supplement is available in several different forms such as sublingual pills, liquids and even injections. By allowing the supplement to penetrate the bloodstream via the mouth instead of through the digestion tract which may modify the vitamin, quicker and more efficient absorption will occur. The body will normally store a reserve of the vitamin in the liver; however those at risk of developing deficiencies include young children whose bodies haven’t yet learned to reserve the vitamin, the elderly because their bodies begin to slow down absorption, and those who eat a plant-based diet such as vegetarians and vegans.

Recommended Dosages

The daily recommended dosages are as follows: pregnant or lactating females: 1.5 mcg, normal adults: 1.0 mcg, and young children: 0.2 mcg. As always, it is advised that you speak to your doctor or physician before taking any type of supplement to make sure that you do not have any underlying medical conditions which may be exacerbated with use of a b12 supplement.
