How to Make Green Bean Casserole

  • 3 tbsp of margarine
  • ½ cup of onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup of mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups of green beans, cut into 2” long strips
  • 1 can of fat-free cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can of French fried onions
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup of low-fat Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 tsp of black pepper

  1. Preheat your oven to 350’F. Spray a large baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Melt margarine in a large frying pan and sauté onions, mushrooms, and garlic in the butter.
  3. Steam the green beans in a steamer basket for 10 minutes. Avoid boiling the beans as this gives them a wet, mushy feel similar to canned beans.
  4. When the beans have steamed, combine beans, sautéed vegetables, cream of mushroom soup, and pepper into the baking dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes and remove from oven.
  6. Top with French fried onions and cheese. Set oven to broil and put the casserole back in the oven for 1 – 3 minutes, until cheese is melted and golden.
